A potential swap deal for players could be on the cards for Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the end of the season.
As reported by the Siya crew, Chiefs are linked with Pirates’ Justice Chabalala, as the team is expected to make squad changes at the end of the current campaign.
Having not won any of the major trophies in the past two-and-a-half years, the pressure is mounting for Chiefs and their coach, Steve Komphela.
One of the areas identified for strengthening in the squad, is the team’s defence, according to sources.
Chiefs’ central defensive partnership has been changed numerous times under Komphela’s mentorship.
A consistent central defensive partnership is often the foundation to success at a club, as was the case with Chiefs in recent times where the Twin Towers, of Tefu Mashamaite and Eric Mathoho, anchored them and helped clinch silverware.
Following Mashamaite’s exit, the team has not established a consistent pairing. Siyanda Xulu has come and gone, Lorenzo Gordinho established himself only to be sent out on loan, while Mathoho has been in and out of the team.
Teenage Hadebe and Daniel Cardoso have established themselves as Komphela’s first choice pairing, and with the 28-year-old Mathoho in and out of the squad, indications are that Chabalala has been identified as Tower’s future replacement.
Tonic Chabalala, who did well as a Pirates defender during his heyday in Mzansi’s professional ranks, has been impressed with Justice.
“For me, he has been doing well. Whenever he has been given an opportunity to play, he has done well, in my opinion. Obviously, I’m not aware of what happens in training at Pirates, maybe the team’s coaches aren’t entirely happy with him, or he has a problem or whatever. But that doesn’t change my opinion that the boy has been doing well,” said the former defender.
“That’s why when he was loaned, he quickly returned to Pirates. For a player to make it back to Pirates, after being loaned by the club, is not easy. Over the years, many players have struggled to return to Pirates after being loaned by the club. I really don’t know what the lack of game-time for him (Justice Chabalala) is about. I have tried calling him to ask for myself why he hasn’t been playing, but I haven’t been successful as yet,” concluded Chabalala.
