Benni’s City Join Race For Wits Target

Cape Town City Keen On Thamsanqa Sangweni

By Masebe Qina - Jun 29, 2017 11:23 AM @MasebeQina

The Siya crew has been reliably informed that Thamsanqa Sangweni is wanted not only by Bidvest Wits, but Cape Town City is said to also be keen on his services.

The Chippa United midfielder is currently with Wits, while the league champions have been in discussions with the relevant parties for his potential move to Sturrock Park. The Siya crew reported that Sangweni was with Wits since yesterday (Thursday), the club’s head coach, Gavin Hunt, later confirmed that the central midfielder is with the club and that a potential deal for him is being negotiated.

A reliable source in the know has confirmed that Cape Town City is also interested in the Dondotha-born player, who previously had a stint with Ajax Cape Town.

While Benni McCarthy’s side has been linked with former Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro, Teko Modise, as first reported by the Siya crew in issue number 1020 of Soccer Laduma, the Mother City club is believed to be also keen on Sangweni.

“There have been meetings (with Wits) and the parties have been discussing, but nothing has been finalised.

“What I can tell you though is that even Cape Town City is chasing the player’s signature. Their interest in the player is known to Chippa,” said the source.

Chippa’s CEO, Peter Koutroulis, is in Johannesburg and discussing a potential move for the player to Wits. The negotiations are ongoing and the Siya crew will keep you updated.

INDIDANE can confirm that former PSL general manager Derek Blanckensee has taken up an administrative role with Orlando Pirates. The PSL parted ways with Blanckensee in September last year due to 'administrative shortcomings in his department in the processing of a registration'. However, the ex-Bidvest Wits official has since linked up with Bucs, who finished a trophyless 2016/17 season outside of the top eight in the league for the first time in the PSL era. "I have joined the club but only as a consultant in administration," said Blanckensee.
