City Close To Makola Signing?
Cape Town City are on the verge of adding former Orlando Pirates midfielder, Mpho Makola to their squad for next season.
According to Siya sources, the 33-year-old playmaker who left Pirates recently after limited playing time last season, is closing in on a move to Cape Town City. Coach, Benni McCarthy is said to be keen on a reunion with his former Orlando Pirates teammate and has identifed Makola as a replacement for the retired Teko Modise. According to Siya sources, other PSL clubs made enquiries into his availability but were told that the player's likely destination is City.
Having started his career playing as a number ten or on the flanks, Makola has moved into a deeper midfield role in recent times, a similar journey to that taken by Modise. Cape Town City are expected to start the season without Roland Putsche, who is training again but still several weeks away from a return. Makola would give greater options to McCarthy in midfield, whilst ensuring that the loss of Modise is not felt as much.
Thabo Nodada is nearing fitness after a right leg fracture and may also miss the opening couple of games, so Makola would add immediate depth and quality to the City squad ahead of the new season. McCarthy has been using central defender Keith Groeneveld in midfield in many of his side's friendlies. With a long-term injury to Taariq Fielies in central defence, Abbubaker Mobara is expected to be used at the back, giving McCarthy one less midfield option.
Makola will be hoping to find his best form again at City, having not recaptured the heights of the 2015/16 season where he scored nine goals for Pirates and netted on his Bafana Bafana debut against Senegal.
