Can Bucs Afford To Lose Both Sangweni And Sarr?

With the 2017/18 season drawing to an end, Orlando Pirates will have to make a decision on which players will have a future at the club.

Sources have indicated that both defensive midfielders, Issa Sarr and Thamsanqa Sangweni, have been deemed surplus to requirements and have fallen down the pecking order of coach Milutin Sredojević.

Both players could find themselves on the transfer list come the end of the season. The Bucs mentor has opted for a central midfield combination of in the form of Musa Nyatama and Mpho Makola, which has yielded positive results for the Soweto giants who currently find themselves in second place on the log and competing for league honours. 

While Nyatama has been a revelation at Pirates, the Serbian coach has benefited from the fact that he has not suffered any major injury scares this season and thus has been available to play consistently. In the case of Makola, Sredojević has opted for either playing Gladwin Shitolo in a defensive midfield position or by bringing on Xola Mlambo and overlooking both Sarr and Sangweni.

In the current campaign, Sarr has made only six league appearance and has only two starts, making this his worst season since joining the Buccaneers in 2016 from Platinum Stars. Sangweni, on the other hand, has made only three league starts since his arrival from Chippa United.

Soccer Laduma has reported that Polokwane City emerged a club interested in bringing Sarr over to their ranks, while a return to Platinum Stars may also be on the cards for the veteran Senegalese midfielder. Media reports have also indicated that AmaZulu are looking at bringing Sangweni back to KZN, where he first emerged as a talented youngster before signing for Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town and subsequently Chippa. 

It remains to be seen what changes will take place at Orlando Pirates when the July/ August transfer window opens.
