The Siya crew reported in December last year that Darren Keet was poised for a move to the USA at the start of 2021, but his agent has confirmed changes to those plans and revealed the ex-Bidvest Wits star was open to offers locally.
“Up until a week or so back a move to the MLS was in progress, but with travel restrictions due to Covid-19 there were constraints,” said Shawn Bester, the players’ representative.
“You can imagine for Darren, his wife and two kids travelling to the USA without any vaccination etc. The time for him to move was around March, but we haven’t been able to manage that because of the situation.”
Keet has been keeping fit with Cape United (previously Cape Umoya) following his return back to SA after he parted ways with Belgium side OH Leuven in October last year,
“In our conversations and meetings we decided it is best to look in the PSL and Darren has made his mind up that he wants to now play locally. We need to find him a club where their ambitions and Darren’s ambitions are a match, similarly to when he came back from Belgium (in 2016) and joined Wits during the Gavin Hunt era,” added Bester.
“You will recall that during that period he won the league, the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout, so he picked up three trophies in the time he was at Wits. That is the ambition that he has.”
Keet, 31, is one of the best free agents on the market and can join any club immediately given that he has had his clearance for a little over five months.
