A club in the Premier Soccer League has made a short-term decision on one of their experienced defender’s future.
Clubs in the PSL were urged to quickly conclude short-term deals for players whose contracts end today, June 30, this in line with the extension of the 2019/20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic which saw a three-month break in football.
Asavela Mbekile joined Stellenbosch FC in February this year on a short-term deal until the end of the 2019/20 season, though the player has an added two-year option set in place on his deal.
As previously reported by the Siya crew, Stellenbosch are yet to make a decision about Mbekile’s long-term future, with indications that the club has not yet seen enough of the player to decide on his extended option.
Although according to Siya sources, the Western Cape-outfit still want him to remain at the club in order to complete the season. It is understood that Mbekile has been handed a short-term extension which would run until the new end dates for the 2019/20 campaign.
However, indications are that Stellenbosch will only make a decision about his added two-year option at the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether the player will get in the needed game-time once the domestic campaign resumes in the coming weeks.
