Another Sponsor Drops PSL!

Following the announcement this month that Absa would not be extending its partnership with the Premier Soccer League, the Siya crew can reveal that another sponsor has pulled the plug on backing topflight football.

Telkom, whose name and bright sky blue logo appears on one of the domestic cups, is believed to have ended its relationship with the PSL.

According to sources, the 2019/20 edition of the Telkom Knockout, which was won by Mamelodi Sundowns in December last year, was the last.

The telecommunication provider became the sponsors of the 16-team format competition as far back as 2006 and were also involved in the Telkom Charity Cup, a one-day tournament where fans voted for their favourite teams to participate via telephone.

But it was scrapped in 2011.

Asked for comment on this parting of ways, Telkom sent a terse statement to the Siya crew only to say: “Telkom is currently not in talks with PSL on sponsorship related matters. We await further direction on the current season and the league in light of COVID-19.”

Earlier today, the telecom firm also announced that it expects its annual earnings to fall by 75 percent because of restructuring costs and the impact of the deadly virus pandemic.

It will announce its results by June 22.

It’s another blow for the PSL after the league lost out on R136-million a season from title sponsors Absa and are now engaged in talks to find a replacement before the new season – and will now have to also find an alternative for Telkom.

Telkom contributed R57-million towards the league’s revenue in the previous financial year. PSL chairman Irvin Khoza was not available for comment at the time of going to print.
