Mamelodi Sundowns could have to make goalkeeping adjustments during the next transfer window, as Thela Ngobeni is linked with a move elsewhere.
Ngobeni is struggling for game-time at Sundowns as he has not played in any of the official matches for the team this season.
As reported in edition 1097 of Soccer Laduma, Free State Stars – the club that previously had Ngobeni on its books on loan from Sundowns – is believed to be keen on having the player back to join Luc Eymael’s squad.
Ea Lla Koto are looking to acquire the services of the shot-stopper on a permanent basis, with the player having previously been part of the team’s Cup-winning squad of last season.
Ngobeni played all five of Stars’ Nedbank Cup matches and was outstanding as the Bethlehem outfit went all the way to win the trophy.
However, the player hasn’t played any matches for Downs so far this season and has been part of the Chloorkop team’s matchday squad only once out of the 12 matches played by the side in all competitions.
While indication from sources in the know is that Ngobeni is being tracked by no less than three PSL clubs, Stars are believed to be leading the race in pursuit of his signature.
Ngobeni, 29, will see his contract with Sundowns come to an end at the end of June next year.
Denis Onyango is Downs’number one under Pitso Mosimane, while Reyaad Pieterse and Kennedy Mweene are competing with Ngobeni for the number two position.
As things stand, it is unlikely that any of the other goalkeepers at Downs would take Onyango’s place in the team as the coach rates him highly.
Following Downs’1-0 over Chippa United last weekend, Mosimane heaped praise on the Ugandan keeper for his performance and he told his club’s official website, “We did well and Denis Onyango is showing that he is one of the best goalkeepers in Africa.”
