Former Bafana Bafana defender Siphiwe Mkhonza has commented on the performance of Percy Tau, whom he labeled as South Africa’s best player right now, against FC Barcelona.
Mkhonza is currently involved in unearthing talent with the Shield Sbonis’iDiski campaign, scouting talented youngsters all-over the country.
During the Shield camp in Cape Town, Soccer Laduma caught up with the former Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs defender.
He suggested that Tau wasn’t at his best against the LaLiga champions after appearing a bit “star-struck” on Wednesday.
“For me, I felt that Percy Tau, our best player now was now at the level that we expected him to be,” he said.
“Against the best, you need to show that you are the best.
“But I think he was star-struck, maybe also in his application from the mindset. Games like that is where you see what you are made off.”
Tau was part of Pitso Mosimane's starting XI against FC Barcelona and had one massive chance to score for Masandawana but his chipped effort was easily saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Mkhonza, meanwhile, is the head coach in Shield South Africa’s ‘Be the next champion’, that will see one lucky talent win a trip of a lifetime to train at Stamford Bridge and meet Chelsea players as well as earn himself a contract with Orlando Pirates MDC team.
