Komphela Comments On Crowning Chiefs Champions  

In Belgium, the 2019/20 season has been called off and Club Brugge, where Percy Tau plays his football, have been crowned champions, though the decision still has to be rubber stamped at a meeting between teams from the country’s top two divisions.

But here at home, Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela is of the opinion that, perhaps, making a similar call in the Absa Premiership would be a bit of a stretch.

His former employers Kaizer Chiefs are currently top of the table with eight games remaining, but reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns are hot on their heels as they trail them by a mere four points and have a match in hand.

“It’s still quite very open to be honest,” said Komphela.

“It’s not like when Chiefs were winning by 13 points, now Sundowns can say mathematically they are still in it. You would still not be as convincing to say we have to hand it over to them (Chiefs). Yes, mathematically Sundowns are in it and look what has happened…there’s a four point gap now and they still have to play each other, which could mean a one point gap with seven matches to play. A lot can happen.”

Tau’s Brugge were 15 points clear with only one game to be played before the board called for the season to be abandoned.  

“It becomes difficult to come up with the same ruling that happened with Club Brugge, where the situation was quite clear. One needs to be very cautious about coming up with a conclusive response to that,” Komphela explained.
