South Africa’s U20s needed a dramatic comeback as they seek to retain the U20 COSAFA Championship title, with a penalty shootout securing their spot in the final.
Helman Mkhalele’s side were 2-0 down against Madagsacar with 65 minutes gone and looked to be heading out of the tournament at the semi-final stage, but SuperSport United’s Oswin Appollis had other ideas as he scored a brace to bring things level, with his equaliser coming in injury time.
SA’s U20s now know that they will have to take on hosts, Zambia, in the final on Saturday as they seek to win the tournament for the second consecutive year, and will be buoyed by the fact that they have the competition's joint top scorer, Appollis (4), at their disposal.
Meanwhile, the Malagasy will face Angola in the third-place play-off after the Angolans were beaten 3-0 by Zambia, with both games set to take place at Nkoloma Stadium on Saturday afternoon – the final is at 15h00.
South Africa are aiming for their ninth U20 COSAFA Championship trophy, while Zambia are looking to win it for the 11th time.
