Bongani Zungu is closing in on a move to the Spanish LaLiga, the Siya crew has been led to believe.
The 27-year-old midfielder spent last season on loan at Rangers in the Scottish Premier League, winning the title with Steven Gerrard’s side, but has had to return to his parent club Amiens in the French Ligue 1 after the option to buy him outright was not exercised.
But that is not where he wants to play his football as confirmed by his agent in an exclusive interview with the Siya crew this week.
Now, it’s understood Zungu could be switching to the Spanish La Liga with RCD Espanyol said to be keen on his services, possibly on a permanent basis.
Amiens still have the Bafana Bafana star on their books until June 2022 and are in a race against time to cash in on his services or risk him leaving as a free agent.
At the time Rangers signed Zungu on loan his price tag was reported to have been around R77-million, but the fee was later revised and taken down to around R54-million.
The financial situation Amiens find himself in currently because of Covid-19 and the fact that they were relegated to the second tier of French football two years ago means they could use the money from Zungu’s possible sale.
It’s not the first time the player catches the eye of a La Liga club – he was close to joining Mallorca in January 2020, but the move fell through on transfer deadline day because Amiens could not find a suitable replacement in time.
It remains to be seen whether Zungu can finally get his move to Spain this time around to join a club that has recently been promoted back to La Liga after one season in the division below.
