The 24-year-old Cape Town born striker as well as well-travelled utility player Ayabulela Konqobe made the move to Finnish second division side Ekenäs at the start of the campaign.
It proved to be a breakout season for the former SuperSport United man after he managed to bag an impressive 21 goals in 26 games in all competitions, which saw him being crowned the Ykkönen top goal scorer for the 2019/20 season with 18 domestic goals to his name.
His inspiring form did not go unnoticed and he immediately attracted the interest of top sides in Europe. However, it was Finnish top flight outfit Esprt Honka who won the race to Smith’s signature.
“Honka has signed his first new player contract when striker Darren Smith, who played for the EIF in the ranks of No. 1 in the past season, joins according to the yellow-blacks,” the club wrote on their social media account.

The Siya crew understands that Honka made an approach for the striker a few months ago, but Ekenäs were resolute in holding onto their top striker. Honka finished in an impressive fourth position in the Veikkausliiga last season.
