Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly progressed to the Egyptian Cup semi-finals courtesy of a 2-1 win over Abou Qir Fertilizers SC on Saturday evening.
Ahly, who just recently nabbed a 42nd league title, pulled in a few fresh faces in the form of Walid Soliman, Mohamed Wahid, Aliou Badji and Geraldo.
Soliman rewarded the faith shown in him by Mosimane after firing in a screamer of a strike on 15 minutes to hand Ahly the lead as the counterparts back-tracked.
The visitors' misery was further compounded towards the midway period in the first half as midfielder Ibrahim Ragab gave away a penalty kick following a foul in the area.
The latter was duly dismissed after getting his second yellow card from the man in the middle before Soliman stepped forward to lash home the spot kick for a two-goal cushion.
Abou pulled a goal back five minutes before the halftime interval courtesy of Kerfala Kouyate following a ball from Hany El Sayed.
Ahly looked for more goals in the second half, with the opponents chasing a comeback but Mosimane’s side gradually managed the momentum of the match to keep matters under wraps.
The Cairo Red Devils went for fresh legs as the final whistle dawned ever closer with Marwan Mohsen amongst others introduced for Badji.
In the end, Ahly did enough to secure a spot in the semi-finals ahead of Friday’s CAF Champions League final with fierce rivals Zamalek.
