THE BREAKDOWN: Will Manyama Be A Star In Turkey?

Lebogang Manyama A Great Option For Konyaspor

By Kyle Smith - Sep 10, 2017 10:01 AM @KyleLaduma

Lebogang Manyama has completed his move to Turkish club Konyaspor after a successful season at Cape Town City. However, will he be a good fit for the Turkish outfit and can it be a platform for a successful career in Europe?

Breaking: City Confirm Manyama’s Transfer To Europe

Click through the images above to see Manyama’s detailed statistics for the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season.

Manyama followed in the footsteps of other South African legends, such as Shoes Moshoeu and Helman Mkhalele, when he completed his move to the Turkish Super Lig, after being linked with Mamelodi Sundowns. However, there will be questions about whether he can replicate the performances that saw him named as the 2017 PSL Player of the Year in a new country, a new league and at a new club.

At his new club, Manyama will be competing with Bosnian attacking midfielder, Deni Milosevic, who made 31 league appearances for the club last season, scoring twice and assisting four goals. Off the bat, Manyama’s goalscoring record was superior last season, but his creativity was not quite up to his new teammate’s standards. However, Manyama did make more passes per 90 minutes, with 37,4 compared to Milosevic’s 31.5 – although, the Bosnian’s accuracy was better, with 86.1% passing accuracy.

Manyama’s crosses in open play eclipsed his teammates, with 2.5 per 90 compared to 0.3. Milosevic was better with the ball at his feet though, completing 2.3 per 90 compared to Manyama’s 0.85. As a result, it would appear, by their respective assist tallies, that Milosevic was better at creating chances last season. However, if Manyama was to drift wide, he might add some creativity to his club from the flanks.

With that said, Manyama’s work in front of goal was far superior to Milosevic’s, with the Bafana Bafana international taking 2.46 shots per 90 minutes, compared to Milosevic’s 1.2. His shot accuracy of 37.9% was far worse than his teammate’s figure of 70.5%, but Milosevic’s 5% conversion rate was less than a quarter of Manyama’s. Manyama also took the majority of his shots from inside the box, while Milosevic tended to resort to shots from outside of the big box, proving that Manyama’s goalscoring instinct is there, while his teammate seems more suited to leaving that to his teammates.

TRANSFER WATCH: The 10 Most Talked About Deals In 17/18

To put this into context, Manyama was playing in a different league with a different quality opposition and a different environment and other conditions, so the statistics won’t tell the whole story. However, if the stats are to be believed, it seems that Konyaspor’s coach, Mustafa Resit Akcay, will need to decide what he wants from his attacking midfielders. If he wants a player that can break down opponents by getting the ball into dangerous zones for his teammates through the middle, Milosevic would be the better option. If he’s looking for penetration from the flanks and a man to find the back of the net, Manyama would be his man.

Do you think Manyama will be a success in Turkey?

@NoelMoshia, if we watched the same games, Manyama was outstanding in both home and away games against Downs. Believe me when I say he reduced Mighty Downs to ordinary team. He worked tirelessly for his team to emerge victorious. I am not saying he was not marvellous against other teams. I am just singling out those Downs games because according to me, he did a lot of damage.

This player reduced Downs to ordinary team last season. He withdrew 6 points from Downs. He is the reason I respect Cape Town City, he broke my heart when he was instrumental in Cape Town City's home and away win against Might Downs,
