How Bafana Star Became A Champion In France, What It Means…
Bafana Bafana’s Lebo Mothiba not only clinched his first European trophy last night with a big victory in the Coupe de la Ligue, but has also won the right to take the next step in his career.
Take a closer look into Mothiba's wild celebrations in the gallery above!
The 23-year-old was unable to follow up his exploits from the semifinals of the tournament as both sides drew a blank at Stade Pierre-Mauroy last night, however did get his hands on the trophy as his side finished the job via a penalty shootout.
So while his Bafana Bafana compatriot, Lebogang Phiri, was left to lick his wounds and turn his attentions to fending off relegation from Ligue 1, Mothiba can start to look forward to playing in next year’s UEFA Europa League qualifiers with Strasbourg as reward for their exploits in the cup final.
Right now Strasbourg are qualified in the same round of the UEL as Premier League giants, Manchester City, however that is likely to change should Pep Guardiola’s side – as expected – go on to clinch a UEFA Champions League spot. If they do, Chelsea will take their place.
Mothiba and his teammates received a hero’s welcome when they returned to their city today following the victory in Lille on Saturday night, though celebrations will be shortlived as the forward looks to get back on the goal trail against Reims on Wednesday evening.
