Big Future! SA Teen Pens EPL Contract…
Leicester City certainly seem to be expecting big things from their young South African attacker, with Khanya Leshabela being handed a new long-term deal by the English Premier League club.
Leshabela, who left South Africa as a child, has been progressing through the ranks at City over the last few years, and on Tuesday it was confirmed that be had penned a new three-and-a-half-year contract that will see him through until 2022 with the Foxes.
The teen was promoted to the club’s U23s this season after impressing at U19 level across the course of 2017/18 and also featured for the club in the 2016/17 UEFA Youth League before taking a step closer to a first team debut when he was named on the bench in the Carabao Cup back in November.
After putting pen to paper, the 19-year-old told LCFC TV, “This is great for me and my family… I’ve worked hard to get this and I’m just grateful to be given such an opportunity. This is the hard bit right now! I’m just looking to push forward and push into the first team.
“It’s gone really quick. It literally just flies by. It’s been a good journey and I just want to stay in the game for many more years. [The Academy staff] have been so supportive and helpful and I’m grateful for all the coaches that I’ve had in the past over my time at the club.”
Leshabela made the squad for Leicester’s FA Cup game this month, however, didn’t make it onto the bench as they were surprisingly knocked out by Newport County.
