SA Teen Makes First Portuguese Start

South African youth international, Katlego Mohamme, is continuing his progress in Portugal, and last week got his first full 90 minutes in a Sertanense jersey.

The 19-year-old, who is with the club on loan from SuperSport United, got his debut in Europe back in September following his move from Mzansi and has been utilised as a substitute over the past couple of months.

Now, however, it appears that Mohamme is working his way into the first team at a steady pace, and was given his first start against Águias do Moradal on Sunday.

The Siya crew got in touch with the SA U17 and U20 international to discuss life in Portugal so far as he looks to start making a name for himself there.

He said, “It’s been a great experience so far… Working with different talented players with different perspectives towards the game, and having to learn the different language, you know!

“Coming all the way here to Europe when you speak only English and your Tswana and Zulu, it’s just not what they know here, so I had to learn Portuguese and make sure I can communicate with my fellow colleagues.

“Overall it’s been great, it’s not that different from where I come from but there is a change of atmosphere I must say.”

And how does he feel about finally breaking into the starting XI?

“I really feel great about it,” he explained. “And I’m happy with myself because I managed to push myself and work hard to make it into the first team. I’m very happy and looking forward to trying to keep my place.”

Meanwhile, when asked about his future beyond his current loan move from Matsatsantsa, he replied, “I’m looking forward to making sure that I stay in Europe for as long as possible... It has always been my dream to play in Europe and raise the South African flag away from home.”

Sertanense are currently fifth and seeking promotion into Portugal’s Segunda Liga.
