Bafana Hopeful Registered For Europa League, Stands Alone
South African defender, Joel Untersee, has been registered by FC Zurich for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League and is the only player from Mzansi left in the tournament.
The 24-year-old was born in South Africa but left for Europe at a young age, however, Bafana Bafana’s Stuart Baxter revealed recently that he has intentions of representing Mzansi despite turning out for Switzerland at youth level.
Untersee, who spent many years on the books of Italian giants, Juventus, played his role in Empoli’s promotion to Serie A last year before securing a permanent move to the club, however just before the transfer window closed he landed a move to Swiss giants, Zurich - where he learned to ply his trade before joining Juve.
Now in the Swiss capital, the defender could make his debut for the club against St. Gallen this evening, and it has been confirmed that he has been registered with UEFA and could feature in their big clash with Napoli next week.
The full back is now the only South African player in either the UEL or UEFA Champions League, and Baxter will be hoping to see him do well as he keeps an eye on him ahead of next month’s vital African Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
