Yet another South African has put pen to paper on a contract with a club in Europe.
Banyana Banyana captain, Janine van Wyk has signed a one year deal with Scottish Champions, Glascow City, becoming the latest player to land a European contract following the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“I am absolutely over the moon that I have been granted this opportunity. It’s tough to recover from a serious injury at age 33 and still think one would be signed by a top club abroad. I am ecstatic and grateful that Glasgow still believes that I could add value to their club after being sidelined for 6-7 months,” van Wyk said, as quoted from the South African Football Association’s official website.
"Excited is not even the word. I think I am as close to feeling the way I felt after qualifying for the World Cup. Not many players get to play in the UEFA Champions League and I am hoping that I get this opportunity with my new club. It will honestly be a huge achievement for me. I am really looking forward to it,” she added.
In other news, Banyana forward, Amanda Mthandi has also signed a one-year deal with Spanish Second Division side Badajoz while defender Nothando Vilakazi has signed for Spanish side EDF Logroño.
