Not only was the powerful striker leading the line as captain of Sparta as they managed to secure their promotion into the top-flight, but he contributed massively over the course of the season before landing himself a call-up back into the Bafana setup by Stuart Baxter.
Bafana Star's Huge Numbers, Seals Glory
It’s been a season to remember for Bafana Bafana’s Lars Veldwijk, and he’ll be hoping to boost his already impressive goal tally if he heads to Egypt for the African Cup of Nations.
Last week it was confirmed that the 27-year-old would be playing in the Dutch Eredivisie next season after Sparta Rotterdam secured a 3-2 aggregate victory over De Graafschap, securing promotion to the top-flight after a strong campaign in the the Eerste Divisie.
With 24 goals and seven assists in 40 games in the league proper and playoffs, Veldwijk's performances this season have understandly won plaudits for him as an individual, and his presence could well be felt at the AFCON if Baxter feels the need to utilise his physical presence up front in any of their games
Bafana are due to play Ghana in a pre-tournament friendly before the AFCON gets underway later in the month, as well as some other North African opponent, and Veldwijk will no doubt be looking to put himself in contention as the team for a starting berth on the opening game against Ivory Coast.
