EPL Interest For Bafana Star Confirmed, Interesting Twist
It’s been a long time since a South African played in the English Premier League, but that could be set to change if Watford get their way in pursuit of a Bafana Bafana star.
Lebo Mothiba had an impressive first season with Strasbourg in Ligue 1 following a big-money move from Lille, with the Bafana international bagging 11 goals for the club as they won the Coupe de la Ligue and qualified for next season’s UEFA Europa League.
Now, with the 23-year-old having arrived back in South Africa for camp with the national team, the Siya crew has been informed that there is growing interest in him from England, however it seems it would take a hefty offer for it to be even considered at this point.
Jihed Taniche, Mothiba's agent, has revealed that there is interest from Watford, but admits that it is something that is unlikely to happen at this point, especially given the process that they’ve just undertaken.
Taniche told the crew, "Lebo had a great first season with Strasbourg, so there's no surprise that there's been interest from other clubs. Watford in England are interested, but Lebo has just started the process for a French passport so unless there's an offer we or Strasbourg can't refuse then he will be staying here."
A big transfer fee would mean that Mothiba would stand a better chance of landing a work permit to play in England, however if he was to secure a French passport then it would give him freedom of travel around Europe and could be potentially huge for his career.
The crew will continue to monitor the player’s situation as the weeks progress, however he will now be focused on having a strong Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana as they look to progress out of the group stages later this month.
