Bongani Zungu came so close to lifting his first European trophy on Sunday, however, his goal in the Taca de Portugal wasn’t enough for Vitoria de Guimaraes.

The 24-year-old has been the subject of speculation recently following a string of fine performances in Portugal, with fellow finalists, Benfica, one of the several clubs believes to be keen on bringing him on board next season.
Zungu started in the heart of Guimaraes’ midfield as they went into the encounter at a rainy Estádio Nacional and after the first half ended 0-0 his club looked to be right on track.
However, two quick-fire goals from Benfica meant Guimaraes were on the backfoot and though Zungu scored a good header in the last few minutes, it was not enough to mount a comeback for his side.
The Bafana Bafana international said on Twitter after the game, “I am really proud about the amount of effort and hard work we put in. Nothing to prove everything to improve.”
He also added that ‘no matter what the future holds’, his current club will always have a ‘special place’ in his heart.
Zungu will now jet back into South Africa this week to team up with Stuart Baxter and his Bafana teammates as they begin preparations for next months’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Nigeria.
