Tau's performances for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise this season saw him nominated for the Player of the Season award in Belgian's second tier, and it was confirmed at the ceremony last night that he had picked up his first European gong in his first season outside of South Africa.
According to the Jupiler Pro League, the 24-year-old absolutely stormed to the Proximus League award with 228 votes to his name, while the other nominees, Nikola Storm and Faïz Selemani got 89 and 84 respectively.
The Bafana star picked up 11 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for RUSG in his debut campaign, and there is now talk regarding where he will be next season when he returns to Brighton & Hove Albion once his loan spell in Belgium comes to an end.
As he was congratulated on his award, the South African was asked about his move to Belgium, to which he replied, "That's football for you... You always end up in places that you never thought of. It's a nice place to be, I have teammates that made it easier for me, and felt like I've been welcomed very well. My entire perspective of Belgium is quite well."
Tau has three games left before his time comes to an end and he turns his attentions to the Africa Cup of Nations, and he will no doubt be itching to get more goals and assists before he's on his way out.
