Confirmed: Bafana Man Discovers UEL Fate
The group stages of Europe’s top two continental tournaments haven’t seen many South Africans of late, but both could have a Bafana Bafana star this year…
Percy Tau’s Club Brugge took one step closer to the UEFA Champions League group stages as they beat Dynamo Kviv 4-3 on aggregate over the weekend, with Austrian side, Linzer Athletik-Sport-Klub, the only thing standing in their way.
Now, following Thursday’s result, Tau’s teammate, Lebo Mothiba, also finds himself on the brink of the group stages of a continental tournament, though his is the UEFA Europa League with Strasbourg.
Mothiba recently returned to the squad after being given extra time off following the African Cup of Nations in Egypt, and watched from the bench this week as Strasbourg got the job done by beating Lokomotiv Plovdiv 1-0 (2-0 on aggregate) to set up a big playoff round clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.
The French side will have their work cut out against the Germans as they look to try and book their spot in the UEL tournament proper, and Mothiba will be hoping to get his first appearance of the season this weekend against Reims before the first leg against Die Adler next week.
The French and German sides will lock horns for the first time on August 22 in Strasbourg, with the second leg happening in Frankfurt a week later on August 29.
