Mothiba v Zungu: “They Won’t Take Points From Us!”
Bafana's Lebo Mothiba Faces Bongani Zungu This Weekend
Today will see Bafana Bafana duo Lebo Mothiba and Bongani Zungu go head-to-head in France, just a few days after they triumphed together with the national team in Zambia.
Mothiba, 22, is coming on in leaps and bounds in France, with Lille fighting hard to recall him from a successful loan spell in Valenciennes before he went on to score on his debut in Ligue 1. This month, he followed that up with two goals in two games for Bafana – one on his debut – as Stuart Baxter’s side won the Four Nations tournament in Ndola.
Now, with Lille desperately trying to escape relegation to Ligue 2, the Diambars graduate says that he’s fully focused on helping them stay up.
After returning from Bafana camp, the young striker told his club’s official website, "What I experienced there was very intense, but now I'm back here with a lot of strength, motivation and confidence. My team is Lille… My job is to give everything for this club that formed me. I care about it. I do not want to hear about relegation. We are all determined to give 200% of what we can give until the end of the season. Today, we are focusing on Amiens and nothing else.”
Meanwhile, when asked about the prospect of facing his compatriot for the first time, Mothiba says that he’s looking forward to it. He won’t be taking it easy on his fellow South African though.
He said, "A good friend of mine, Bongani Zungu, plays in Amiens. I just spent last week with him in selection, he was even my roommate... We talked a lot about this game, both of us. He says that his team plays very well on the ball, and that they are quite technical. He also told me that they will probably proceed in counter-attacks, but we already knew that. They still need three or four victories to maintain them, but it will not be against us that they will take points.”
The two teams will lock horns behind closed doors later this afternoon.
