Orlando Pirates have sought to clear the air on what has been widely reported as a show of defiance by one of their players following a proposed loan deal.
Gladwin Shitolo was meant to return to Chippa United for the upcoming 2019/20 season having spent the last six months there, but the defender – despite the Buccaneers confirming the agreement – instead showed up at Golden Arrows.
“I think it is important to note that the club’s decision is made in consultation with the technical team and they believed that the player would continue to do well if he returns to Chippa seeing as he started every game there while he was on loan for the second half of the previous season,” Pirates football administrator Floyd Mbele explained to the Siya crew a day after the club confirmed Shitolo would indeed move to KwaZulu-Natal for another spell on loan.
“The player then opted to go to Arrows, where he spent a fruitful season before and felt he could continue to grow there.”
The numbers don’t lie – Shitolo managed 32 appearances in all competitions for Arrows and contributed with five goals during the 2015/16 season. Clinton Larsen was the coach then prior to his move to Chippa earlier this year.
