Veteran midfielder Solomon Mathe has questioned the exclusion of Xola Mlambo from the matchday squads at Orlando Pirates in recent matches.
‘Ten Ten’, as Mlambo is affectionately known, has struggled for game-time at the Buccaneers, having featured in only seven Absa Premiership matches for the team so far this season, with the former Bidvest Wits midfield ace also being linked with an exit from the Soweto giants.
Mathe – a former Pirates player himself during the prime of his career – sees a role for the 28-year-old in German coach Josef Zinnbauer’s team.
“Honestly speaking I am surprised myself also as to why Xola Mlambo is not playing as he is one of the players I like. I was impressed with him for the way he played during his time at Wits. He is a good player,” Mathe told the Siya crew.
Mlambo didn’t feature in any of the last 11 league matches for Bucs prior to the enforced PSL break due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Mathe – the ex-Platinum Stars midfield workaholic, says he thought Mlambo might have perhaps been injured.
“I think it’s because Pirates play at a fast pace as that is their style of play. Maybe that’s why the coaches don’t give him a chance to play, because he is not the kind of player who is that fast. But as for me, in a team like Pirates you do need players like Mlambo because he knows how to dictate the pace of the game, especially when the team is under pressure from the opposition’s attack. He is one of those who will just hold the ball to slow the pace of the game. I really don’t know what’s going on, I even thought that he was injured!” Mathe concluded.
