Ex-Buccaneer: That’s Why Lorch Became The Darling Of SA Football

The imminent return of Thembinkosi Lorch has brought so much joy to the Orlando Pirates family, with one of the club’s former players weighing in on the star player’s comeback.

Having missed the better part of the 2021/22 season so far after a freak shoulder injury, Lorch is close to making his way to full recovery.

The club confirmed the attacker’s imminent return, with the 28-year-old in the last stages of his rehabilitation, though the technical team will make a decision on when to include him in matchday squads, depending on his fitness levels once he has fully resumed training with the rest of the team.

Speaking to the Siya crew, former Pirates midfield ace Andile ‘Sguda’ Cele has welcomed the news on Lorch and is expecting the ex-PSL’s Footballer of the Season to lead the Buccaneers to greater heights.

“Lorch’s return will most definitely be a huge boost for the team. However, not all of us as footballers manage to get going when we come back from injury. Yes, some players do come back and be on top of their game, but others take time. I had an opportunity of watching Pirates when they played against Golden Arrows at the weekend, and I thought they played well. I am impressed with how the team is playing under coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids and I know that at the moment they have challenges when they reach the final third and all of that, but it’s work in progress. Maybe Lorch will come in and tick that box of them being penetrative,” said Cele.

“Getting back the guys who are deadly in front of goal like Lorch and (Vincent) Pule will help Pirates to improve in the last third. Players like Messi are the best in world football because over the last decade or so they have been making a difference for their teams. It’s the same for Lorch, he has been the best in what he does and making the difference and that’s why he became the darling of South African football. Themba Zwane is the darling of South African football because he is making the difference in critical areas of the field. I think at Pirates they are missing their star players on those critical areas of the field,” added Cele.
