Thabiso Kutumela is enjoying what is arguably the best form of his life at Maritzburg United this season, and now the forward has revealed why things didn’t work out as planned during his stint with Orlando Pirates.
Kutumela burst onto the scene when he ripped up the goalscoring charts with Baroka FC in the NFD (Now GladAfrica Championship) scoring 18 goals for Bakgaga.
Naturally, those kind of numbers would attract the country’s biggest teams and it came as very little surprise that ‘Messi’ was snapped up by the Buccaneers in 2016.
However, things didn’t quite work out as planned for Kutumela during his three-year stay with the Soweto giants and he eventually left to join Maritzburg United in 2019.
In edition 1220 of Soccer Laduma, he opens up on the challenges he faced at Prates.
“To put it this way, I think they (Pirates) gave me a chance,” Kutumela told Soccer Laduma.
“It’s just the seasons are not the same and the pressure of the team is not the same. Pirates is a big team, who need to win trophies. When you sign there, you’ll say on your side ‘I want to help the team to win trophies’, but it didn’t happen when I was there. But look after I left, then the coming group came and won something. That is why I said it’s a thing of season to season and which one is good. So, when I was there, when I arrived, I got injuries, but the other season when we finished in second place, I played so many games. I was there in the starting line-up always, but then I got injured again before we played the derby and that is when I started getting injuries,” he added.
This season, Kutumela has scored nine league goals for the Team of Choice and is on course to reach his best ever goal return in Mzansi’s top flight.
In the latest edition of Soccer Laduma Kutumela also discusses:
- His relationship with Ernst Middendorp
- Getting his chance with Bafana Bafana
- Why he hopes to continue with Maritzburg
