Bucs Top Scorer: It Was Hard…

Orlando Pirates’ top goalscorer Gabadinho Mhango has opened up on his struggles that has seen the goals dry up this season.

Mhango has scored just three goals for Pirates this season, something that is worrying for both club and country considering that the 28-year-old was the joint-top goalscorer, with 16 strikes in the league last season.

In his defence, the former Bidvest Wits striker has been hampered by injuries this campaign and often looked short of confidence when he featured for Josef Zinnbauer’s side. In addition, Mhango has also had to deal with the arrival of Pirates’ new boys in Terrence Dzvukamanja and Jean-Marc Makusu, who have provided stern competition for a starting berth.

Now, after remarkably helping his country reach their first AFCON finals since 2010, the Malawian has opened up on his struggles and commented on whether injuries had derailed his plans at the start of this campaign.

“Absolutely! But you know, as a player, you need to accept that injuries are a part of the game. You might tell yourself 'I want to do this and that' during the course of the season, but injuries can disrupt those plans,” Mhango told Pirates’ media department in an exclusive interview.

“Yeah, I have to say it was hard. Especially coming back after an injury can sometimes feel like starting from scratch. It can affect your performance. But credit must go to the Orlando Pirates medical team for their hard work behind the scenes,” he added.

‘Gaba’ will now be looking to help guide Pirates to the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederations Cup, something they can aspire to if they get a victory over Al Ahly Bengazi, who they take on at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday.

“When we played them in Libya, I feel we were the better team. It's just unfortunate that we did not have the best luck on the day. They are a tough opponent, but with us playing at home, it's now a must-win game. We want to win this game, because doing so will put us in a good position in the group. The feeling in the camp is that we must leave everything on the field on Sunday.”
