Rulani On Why Bucs’ Double Sub Worked

Orlando Pirates spotted a gap when Polokwane City changed their approach during Tuesday’s game and took advantage with their double substitution, turning the Absa Premiership encounter in their favour, coach Rulani Mokwena has said.

The Buccaneers conceded early, but were level at half-time and it wasn’t until Mokwena brought on Kabelo Dlamini and Tshegofatso Mabasa that they were able to take the lead and run out eventual 3-2 winners last night.

“The double substitution, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. When they work we get a pat on the back and when they don’t you castrate us and rightfully so,” Mokwena, speaking to journalists after the game, said.

Both Dlamini and Mabasa got on the scoresheet some minutes after being brought on for Gabadinho Mhango and Xola Mlambo respectively.

“Fortunately this time they worked out and I think the only reason is that when Polokwane shifted (Jabu) Maluleke to the right wing they exposed their midfield and that’s why we asked Kabelo to play more as a No.10 and we overloaded our midfield a bit more and played a bit narrow with our structure because we had the space. But like I said, sometimes they work and other times they don’t. You have to congratulate the players they were outstanding,” Mokwena added.
