Orlando Pirates look set to win the race for one of Golden Arrows’ pivotal players from their memorable 2020/21 season.
As reported by the Siya crew on Friday, attacker Ntsako Makhubela has been given permission to stop training with the club and indications are that he is currently at home in Gauteng.
Both Pirates and Chiefs have had the player on their radar, and initially, it was Mamelodi Sundowns who appeared closer to signing the player, but it’s understood the Brazilians have moved on.
The transfer window will officially close on August 31, which means time is running out for Makhubela to settle at his new club – wherever that might be.
According to sources, Pirates are the leading favourites to sign the 27-year-old before the registration period is closed.
It’s understood Chiefs have not ruled out the possibility of hijacking the deal, but given the relationship between Arrows and their Soweto rivals, it would take some serious wheeling and dealing to win this potential tussle.
Arrows got their 2021/22 season underway over the weekend with a win over SuperSport United in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 and will now face Sundowns over two legs in the semifinals.
Ntsako, as expected, was not part of their matchday squad, with the Siya crew informed that the technical team at Arrows is planning for life without one of their influential players last season.
He featured in 24 matches as the KwaZulu-Natal team managed an impressive fourth-place finish under then-coach Mandla Ncikazi, who has since joined Pirates as an assistant coach.
