Two Gauteng clubs are thought to be in the race for Kwanda Mngonyama, who, surprisingly, recently became a free agent.
The Siya crew reported early last month that defender was leaving Maritzburg United after his contract with the Midlands outfit was not extended.
Mngonyama, 27, told Soccer Laduma at the time that his intention was still to “play at the highest level” having previously been on the books of Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City. He was also at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
According to insiders, SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates have identified the defender as a potential signing ahead of the start of the 2021/22 season, although a delay in tying him down could risk other potential suitors beating them to his signature.
Given that Mngonyama is a free agent, he can sign for a club of his choice at any time, but the player would not want to take too long to make up his mind should he receive multiple offers, the Siya crew has been told.
SSU could soon be looking for a replacement for Grant Kekana, who is likely to join rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as Bongani Khumalo if the veteran centre-back does not get a new contract in the coming weeks.
Pirates have yet to officially confirm departures and arrivals at the club, but Soccer Laduma has previously reported that Monnapule Saleng, Bandile Shandu, Goodman Mosele and Evidence Makgopa are expected to join the Buccaneers.
There has been criticism that the Soweto giants looked short at the back last season, and perhaps Mngonyama could be the answer.
