How Ntseki Gave Pirates Star His Breakthrough

Orlando Pirates full back Wayde Jooste has detailed how current Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki gave him his big break in professional football.

Jooste’s journey in the PSL has been a long one. As a boy from Port Elizabeth, who had to travel all the way to Mangaung, where he got his big break, before another journey to Lamontville came beckoning, and finally Johannesburg, where he has spent the last two years.

The 29-year-old has taken to life as a Buccaneer like a duck to water, quickly silencing the detractors who had raised eyebrows when he was snapped up from the now-defunct Highlands Park at the start of the season.

Little was known about the man who idolized David Beckham and later Cristiano Ronaldo as a boy, however, speaking to Pirates’ official media channels, Jooste details his journey to the top flight of South African football.

“I’m originally from P.E and I got my big break when I got spotted in P.E and somebody, who knows somebody at Bloemfontein Celtic asked me if I would like to come and trial there. At that time the head of development was coach Molefi Ntseki and he had a look at me for two days, then he asked me if I’d be willing to move up to the Free State. I joined the reserve team at the time, and I got promoted to the first team after one season there,” Jooste said speaking to Pirates TV.

Since his move to the Soweto giants, Jooste has quickly made the right full-back position his own displacing the likes of Abel Mabaso and young Thabiso Monyane.

So far this season, Jooste has made five appearances in all competitions, more impressively guiding the Buccaneers to their first cup final in two years, where they will take on his former team Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 final on December 12.
