Tipped to set the scene alight when he joined Orlando Pirates back in 2018, an out-of-favour midfielder could benefit from seeking an exit from the Soweto giants.
The former Stellenbosch man is so highly rated that the legendary Jomo Sono regards him as the best left-footed player and best passer of the ball in South Africa.
However, things didn’t go according to plan for Nkanyiso Zungu as he has endured a nightmarish period at Pirates. In two seasons at the club, Zungu only made 22 appearances in all competitions while failing to find the back of the net and provide any assists.
Off-the-field issues also hindered Zungu’s progress at Pirates. At some stage, he was suspended, pending an internal investigation by Pirates, as he was arrested on charges of domestic violence. But the charges were dropped.
And with Zungu, 26, seemingly not in Pirates’ plans, a change of scenery would be ideal for him, and the Siya crew has been led to believe that DStv Premiership newcomers Richards Bay are eager to give him a new lease of life.
On a mission to strengthen their squad ahead of their maiden campaign in South Africa’s topflight, Bay, who clinched the 2021/22 GladAfrica Championship title, feel Zungu’s experience could help them settle into their new life in the big league.
According to the Siya sources, the Pitso Dladla-coached side has inquired about the availability of Zungu either on a permanent deal or loan.
However, it remains to be seen if the KwaZulu-Natal outfit and Pirates agree on a deal.
