Orlando Pirates was his ultimate choice, but highly-rated winger Deon Hotto had a list of the country’s top clubs to choose from after leaving Bidvest Wits.
His performances for the Clever Boys over the last few seasons would inevitably attract the interest of the country’s ‘Big Three’ clubs, but for Hotto, there was only one club on his mind.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma in edition 1194, the Namibian confirmed that he had a choice between a reunion with Gavin Hunt at Kaizer Chiefs, or forming part of Pitso Mosimane’s winning project at Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, he ended up choosing the Buccaneers, a team he supported all his life.
“(Mamelodi) Sundowns was there also, and Chiefs. But I opted to go to Pirates, because the way we handled the deal with them was something I am going to cherish for the rest of my life. To be honest, the ball was in my court and I decided that I would go with Pirates. It’s a team I know from growing up. I had a good chat with the coach (Pitso Mosimane). I spoke to Pitso, but he did understand my situation and he said, “It’s fine, boy.” He does understand why I chose Pirates,” Hotto said.
The Namibian international also shared that his hard work and dedication to his craft over the last few years, has led to the continued interest in his services from big clubs.
“It’s not like I am trying to act big or anything like that, but it shows that what I’ve been doing throughout my career, there are people watching. It’s my hard work which has led to a place where Pirates wants me, Sundowns wants me, Chiefs wants me. It shows that I am doing something great on the pitch. That’s why the Big Three wanted me. I am doing something right,” he added.
Hotto also discusses:
- How he can be used by Pirates
- His father’s heart-to-heart with the Iron Duke
- Having his former captain Thulani Hlatshwayo by his side
