Orlando Pirates are said to be tracking Chippa United striker Augustine Kwem, who has been in fine form for the Chilli Boys, but the Buccaneers might have to stall their interest in the player, for now…
After hitting the ground running in the country’s top-flight with Chippa United, whom he joined from ABC Motsepe League side Sibanye FC last season, the 23-year-old has been a revelation for the Chilli Boys. He finished the 2019/20 season with eight goals in all competitions.
Kwem’s fine performances for Chippa prompted interest from various European teams as well as clubs in the Egyptian Premier League, and now clubs in the PSL have started taking note too.
Despite the widespread interest in his services, the striker opted to stay in Port Elizabeth and pledged his allegiance to the Chilli Boys, penning a new three-year deal with the club ahead of the 2020/21 season.
According to Siya sources, Bucs are tracking the Nigerian’s progress and the player would be keen on the move if it presented itself. The crew has it on good authority that there have been no official talks with the player as yet, but that could change if he continues to find the back of the net.
One of the reasons the Buccaneers could stall their pursuit of the Nigerian for now, is due to the form of the club’s current crop of attackers which consists of Gabadinho Mhango, Zakhele Lepasa, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Terrence Dzvukamanja, who are currently firing all on cylinders, while fans are yet to get a glimpse of the newly-acquired Jean-Marc Makusu, whose debut is imminent.
Pirates still have one foreign spot open and with their tight domestic and continental schedule, they could be looking to further bolster their attack in future, with Kwem said to be the ideal candidate.
Moreover, Pirates and Chippa United have enjoyed a fruitful relationship over the last few years and a number of players have moved between the clubs. Don’t be surprised if a move does materialise, should Pirates make a move for Kwem next year!
The forward has continued with his fine form this campaign and to date, has scored two goals and notched up an assist in his five league appearances under coach Lehlohonolo Seema.
