Bucs Rope In Dutch Coach, Doubts Over Sandilands

Orlando Pirates have added another coach to the club’s technical staff, casting a doubt over the future of Wayne Sandilands.

As reported by the Siya crew back in May, Pirates have been tracking former Cape Town City goalkeeper coach Sjoerd Woudenberg for some time to occupy the goalkeeping coach role that has been vacant since the club parted ways with Jyri Nieminen in December last year.

Veteran goalkeeper, Sandilands, 36, had been occupying the role, albeit on a temporary basis.

Now Pirates have confirmed that they have roped in the UEFA B Licence holder, with the 34-year-old conducting an interview with the club’s media department on Tuesday, revealing his plans to make the Bucs goalkeeping department the best in the country, having already joined the club’s pre-season camp in Rustenburg.

“I think if you train every goalkeeper session (at) the highest level, then you should add up to things quick in my way of working. I try to improve the goalkeepers and to be honest, you see last week how they already made steps in their development. We have a very tough pre-season but if you look at the squad, if you look at the goalkeepers and the technical team, it's top quality in every department and I'm happy to be here,” he told the club’s media department.

“To be honest it must not be so tough to reach the highest level, especially for a club like Pirates, you must have the best goalkeepers in the country and that's what I want to reach with the goalkeepers.

“It's going to be very positive and I hope that they can show the things that we working on during the game and if you see how they adapt. It's good that we have a tough pre-season with a lot of training sessions, but it also gives us the opportunity to improve everything on each goalkeeper and also every goalkeeper is in a different phase of his career. We have two youngsters and three older goalkeepers, so yeah I'm very happy to help them with their development.

“Orlando Pirates is the biggest team in South Africa and one of the biggest teams on the continent and I think everyone wants to work for a big club like this and Orlando Pirates have given me the opportunity and I will take it,” he added.

Sandilands, whose contract with the club expired last month, appears to have been roped back in among the club’s goalkeepers, which now comprises of Richard Ofori, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Kopano Thuntsane and Elson Sithole.

It remains to be seen if the veteran continues with the Soweto giants next season, with Pirates currently in discussions with the club’s out-of-contract players.
