R6m Blow For Pirates After Cup Exit

Orlando Pirates have lost out on a whopping R6 million after exiting the CAF Confederation Cup at the quarterfinal stage, amid calls for head coach Josef Zinnbauer to step down.

On Sunday, Pirates disappointingly exited the Confederation Cup after being handed a 4-0 defeat by Raja Casablanca in Morocco, following their 1-1 draw in the first leg fixture in Orlando the previous week.

By qualifying for the quarterfinals of the continental competition, the Buccaneers were guaranteed to pocket US350 000 (+/-R4 843 000) and were set to take home USD450 000 (+/-R6 216 000) had they reached the semi-finals.

The winners of the competition take home a cool USD1.25 million (R+/-17 273 000).

So far this season, Pirates have bagged R8-million by winning the MTN8 in December, while they have also added R400 000 for reaching the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Meanwhile, there have been growing concerns from some sections of the Pirates fans regarding Zinnbauer’s future, following some disappointing results by the team of late.

Bucs have slipped to fourth place on the log after collecting only five points from a possible 12 in their last four DStv Premiership matches and will be at risk of missing out on a second place finish if the team’s performances do not improve in the remaining four fixtures of the campaign.

After the fans of their perennial rivals Kaizer Chiefs recently marched to the club’s headquarters in Naturena to voice their concerns over some of the operations, Pirates fans have organised a march of their own which is scheduled to take place in Soweto on June 5 to hand over a memorandum to call for the German coach’s removal from the hot seat.
