Orlando Pirates legend and former goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo disapproves of many signings by the club.
In recent seasons, the Buccaneers have been busy in the transfer market in reinforcing the team with some top players from different clubs in the Absa Premiership and outside Mzansi.
Among the players that the club has been linked with as the 2019/20 season is expected to finally conclude is Bidvest Wits defender and captain Thulani Hlatshwayo and outgoing Maritzburg United defender Siyanda Xulu.
However, Mayoyo doesn’t seem to be excited about the news of the two players possibly joining the Soweto giants, amid various reports indicating that could be the case.
“But Orlando Pirates have been signing defenders and the boy who joined them from Bloemfontein Celtic – Alfred Ndengane – is one of them. When he was signed it was the same hype, and has he ever played (Ndengane has made 5 league starts so far this season)? That’s where we should start looking at it,” Mayoyo told the Siya crew.
“Most of the time big clubs will sign big name players not to beef up their squads but to weaken other clubs. And our players prefer rewards (money) more than to improve themselves. That’s why they don’t even go overseas. When you are good wherever you are you must look for something better and bigger. There was nothing different from Wits and Pirates. They are both Gauteng teams, and for that matter Wits has been the bigger club compared to most clubs in the league. We can’t say that the boy (Hlatshwayo) hasn’t been playing for a big club. Yes, a move to Orlando Pirates is a good move but they (Hlatshwayo and Xulu) must remember that they were stars where they were,” the former shot-stopper added.
