Pirates’ Big Striker Decision Pending…

One of the big decisions that may have to be made by Orlando Pirates at the end of the season would be regarding the future of Justin Shonga, according to sources in the know.

The Zambian international striker has appeared to be unsettled in recent weeks, due to lack of regular game-time at the Soweto giants.

The 23-year-old player’s representatives are believed to be working around the clock, with a view of getting the forward opportunities, preferably overseas at the end of the season, after failing in their attempts to do so during the January transfer window.

As reported in edition 1162 of Soccer Laduma, Shonga is expected to push for an end-of-season move, having previously been linked with clubs in Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan, among other countries.

Apart from a rare appearance in the Nedbank Cup against Bidvest Wits, when the Buccaneers lost at Orlando earlier this month, Shonga has not seen enough action under coach Josef Zinnbauer, with the Zambian international said to be worried that his lack of time on the field at Bucs could hamper his chances in the national team ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Shonga’s last league appearance was during Pirates’ first match of the year against Bloemfontein Celtic on January 04.

After joining the Buccaneers in 2017, having been strongly linked with Mamelodi Sundowns prior to that, Shonga said he opted for the Soweto giants because he thought he would have better chance of game-time at the club at the time.

However, since the departure of Milutin Sredejovic from Bucs, Shonga has had limited time on the field at the club.
