With Orlando Pirates being linked with Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach Steve Komphela, the Soweto giants have commented on the recent reports.
Following the departure of Mandla Ncikazi from Golden Arrows on Wednesday, speculation has been rife that the coach might be on his way to Pirates, with the indications that the Buccaneers could part ways with Josef Zinnbauer whose future has been uncertain for several weeks.
Furthermore, the talk in the local football fraternity is that Komphela could also be on his way to Pirates, with the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor expected to reunite with his ex-assistant coach and old friend at Bucs as part of the plans for the new season.
Speaking to the Siya crew, Pirates’ technical director Stanley ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala refuted the reports in saying that there had been no discussions about Komphela at the club.
“We haven’t discussed anything about Steve Komphela. Steve Komphela is contracted to Sundowns. About the other coach (Ncikazi), I’m made to believe that there was a misunderstanding (at Arrows) and he left. As far as I know, we still have a coach in Zinnbauer,” he said.
Komphela joined Sundowns in October last year, after leaving Arrows where he worked with Ncikazi. The former Bloemfontein Celtic mentor celebrated his first season at the Chloorkop outfit with a league winner’s medal after he, Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena guided the team to domestic success.
