New Signing Sends Bucs To MTN8 Semis

MTN8

Result Orlando Pirates 1-0 Cape Town City

Date: 17 October 2020

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Terrence Dzvukamanja scored on debut for Orlando Pirates, who progressed to the MTN8 semi-finals with a 1-0 win over ten-man Cape Town City.

Pirates handed debuts to Wayde Jooste, Deon Hotto and Terrence Dzvukamanja while Happy Jele and Thembinkosi Lorch were benched, with Ntsikelelo Nyauza partnering another debutant Thulani Hlatshwayo, who was given the captain's armband.

The Citizens were forceful in the early stages, pressing the Buccaneers high up the pitch and forcing them into errors but they lacked the finishing touches.

After their sluggish start, Dzvukamanja broke the deadlock for the hosts midway into the first-stanza with a glancing header that looped over goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh from Jooste's cross.

City were in trouble in the 33rd minute as they were reduced to ten men after Fagrie Lakay was red-carded for a lunging tackle on Jooste's ankle, leaving the visitors with the tough task for the rest of the game.

The Citizens committed men forward after the break but were vulnerable on counter-attacks as Vincent Pule had a big chance to double the lead for the hosts ten minutes inside the second stanza after going clear inside the box but Leeuwenburgh made a crucial save to keep the visitors in the game.

Zinnbauer responded with a double change in the 65th minute, as Kabelo Dlamini and Tebogo Tlolane came on for Dzvukamanja and Hotto.

Zakhele Lepasa had a wonderful chance to kill the game in the last six minutes after going through from a counter-attack but Leeuwenburgh made another crucial save in a one-on-one situation while the City shot-stopper denied Dlamini in another one-on-one moments later.

Abbubaker Mobara came very close for City in stoppages, with his shot missing the far post by a whisker as Pirates held on to book a spot in the semi-finals for the first time since 2014.
