Orlando Pirates coach Mandla Ncikazi has made a bold comparison between the Buccaneers and Mamelodi Sundowns after their 2-0 CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary Round win.
The Buccaneers continued their upward resurgence that saw them make it two wins from two matches after steamrolling Stellenbosch FC in the DStv Premiership, as well as securing a first leg win against Liberia’s LPRC Oilers on Sunday.
Oozing in confidence, Pirates coach Ncikazi commented on the positive turnaround made by the club after a shaky start to the season, further adding that Pirates are on the level of Sundowns, who have been excelling both on the continent and in domestic competitions.
“We are [on] the level of [Mamelodi] Sundowns but we even have more support than Sundowns! But Pirates are not achieving at their best currently, but we understand the process. It’s the new leadership, it’s the players that have been injured but now we are on the right track towards achieving big things,” Ncikazi told the Liberian press after the match.
A further boost to Pirates’ cause this season has been the return to full fitness of some of their regular stars with Gabadinho Mhango the latest player to be reintegrated into their matchday squad.
“Half of our squad that played [in the] previous season are not here. So it is positive that one each is coming back. We have one that started playing today who has never played in the season in South Africa, so it is important that we won today. It is important that we have the momentum of winning. Pirates is a big team in South Africa, you are expected to win every match, every weekend,” he added.
There is very little respite for the Buccaneers who are set to host Baroka FC at the Orlando Stadium in DStv Premiership action on Thursday.
