Bucs Coach Explains Quiet Transfer Window

Orlando Pirates first team coach Mandla Ncikazi has explained why the club was relatively inactive in the recently-closed transfer window.

While most clubs spent the January transfer market actively bolstering their squads for the second half of the season, Pirates have been relatively quiet, failing to make a single acquisition.

Besides youngster Simo Bophela who was sent out on loan to Venda Football Academy in the GladAfrica Championship, no player has either arrived or departed from the Buccaneers.

Speaking to media at the Nedbank Cup launch on Wednesday evening, Ncikazi explained the Buccaneers’ subdued transfer window.

“There is no coach that has ever been happy with the squad, we are always ambitious. If we had enough resources like others maybe I would bring a [Lionel] Messi to Pirates. Having said that, we are never enough. There are areas that you would wish [to strengthen] but sometimes the timing of bringing players, which I think becomes important in our team, with regards to when and how they bring the players. We respect their vision and wisdom on how they do it, but personally I would have loved to have certain players, but we respect the processes on how they do things," Ncikazi explained at the media day.

The likes of Nkanyiso Zungu, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Tebogo Tlolane were all touted for loan moves that would ensure more regular game-time in the second half of the campaign, but Ncikazi explained why they opted to hold onto their peripheral players.

“You cannot take out without bringing in. COVID-19 has taught me to expect the unexpected, so based on what is happening with COVID, you can’t have a very thin squad and the club being involved with CAF competition, we’ll need a lot of players.

“If you look at the fixtures we are going to be engaged in, we are going to rotate the players and use some in the league, so we cannot take out without bringing in. I’m not sure if there is still a possibility but we respect the processes within the club,” he said.
