Speaking for the first time as an Orlando Pirates player, midfielder Fortune Makaringe on Thursday explained why he chose the Buccaneers when there was rumoured interest from Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Makaringe, who joined from Maritzburg United, told the media ahead of the Carling Black Label Cup against Chiefs on Saturday.
“But as soon as Pirates called, I felt I had to respond because I knew the rich history this team holds. And for me to be chosen by Pirates meant a lot. I know that Orlando Pirates doesn’t just chose anyone – there are too many players out there that want to play for this club. So as soon as they come, you have to respond.”
Makaringe was also recently cut from the Bafana Bafana squad that made it to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations having been selected for the provisional squad by coach Stuart Baxter.
“I only grew from that. And one of the reasons I came to this club is because I will get to compete with the best and that will only improve my chances of playing for the national team,” the midfielder said.
