Orlando Pirates duo Thembinkosi Lorch and Fortune Makaringe have been praised for their contribution to the team as the Soweto giants won their second successive match in the DStv Premiership to keep their hopes of finishing in second place alive.
Since losing to Kaizer Chiefs last month, the Buccaneers have showed much improvement in their performances and results, following back-to-back wins against SuperSport United three weeks ago and against Sekhukhune United last night.
As the match against Babina Noko appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw with Bucs having also had a Deon Hotto penalty saved by Ayanda Dlamini in the 63rd minute, Makaringe scored in the 82nd minute to get the three points for his side after some great work from Lorch and Tshegofatso Mabasa who provided the assist.
Both Lorch and Makaringe had come on as substitutes with 10 minutes to go but were able to make instant impact and Pirates’ co-coach Mandla Ncikazi has been impressed with the duo’s contribution.
“When the penalty was about to be taken we wanted to bring Ben (Motshwari) in to reinforce then we had to change when we missed the penalty. (We) tried to go for more offensive players. They (Sekhukhune) stretched the line into a five-defence line, so you’re not going to get a lot of spaces from wide areas (from Bandile) Shandu (and Deon) Hotto. We had to be creative in front of goal and I thought Lorch (and) Fortune did well,” said Ncikazi, speaking to Pirates’ media department.
Ncikazi also praised Siphesihle Ndlovu who was handed a rare start and produced a sublime performance.
“Ndlovu did well for somebody who has not played for such a long time to come in and play the way he played... I thought he got the penalty. Have the number 10s, we are going to face more blocks, it’s not the last time we do that and we have to be very creative in front of the defence,” the coach said.
