Bucs Youngster’s Performance Throws Spanner In The Works?

Orlando Pirates’ mercurial left-back Bongani Sam could have thrown a potential spanner in the works with his bright performance against Golden Arrows on Wednesday.

Before Wednesday’s match, Sam had made only two appearances for Pirates with indications that the player did not form part of coach Josef Zinnbauer’s immediate plans, as he is currently considered as Bucs’ third-choice left-back behind Paseka Mako and Innocent Maela.

As reported in Soccer Laduma edition 1207, in search of more regular game time, Sam could leave the Buccaneers, albeit on loan, with both SuperSport United and AmaZulu said to be keen on the 23-year-old.

However, Pirates’ underwhelming performances in recent matches saw coach Zinnbauer ring in the changes to freshen up the squad, one of which included Sam.

The young full-back enjoyed a successful afternoon on the left flank with his attacking impetus clear for all to see, before he was eventually replaced by Deon Hotto after 61 minutes.

Following the match, Zinnbauer heaped praise on his young defender, who was one of the shining lights in Pirates’ dim performance.

“Sam had a good performance. He was good in the game and he had good opportunities in terms of crossing, in terms of his runs in the final third,” Zinnbauer told the media after the match.

Zinnbauer’s comments may well suggest that Sam has worked his way back into the German’s plans, although if he is to realise his dream of forming part of coach David Notoane’s 2021 Olympic squad, Sam will have a decision to make, especially with the transfer window having opened on 18 January.
