Inside Pirates: Getting To Know Zinnbauer

Orlando Pirates on Monday afternoon gave the media a first real glimpse into Josef Zinnbauer, the 49-year-old German coach who was appointed early last month and who has already been in charge of three Absa Premiership matches, winning two and drawing the other.

The press conference was to build up to their much-anticipated clash at home against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns tomorrow night, but given that Zinnbauer had not officially been announced to the media, many of the questions were about his playing style, philosophy, background and why he came to Africa.

Below are some of the coach’s answers to several of the burning questions:

Why the PSL?

“I got a lot of information about Africa before I came and I made sure I watched a lot of the games. I have a scout based on the continent who asked me whether I would be interested. It is always so, that when you go to another country – you have to have watched games, have your own philosophy, experience and bring this in.”

Do you have a certain style?

“I have given my staff my philosophy and we make good work. We have opened the mind, we need fun when we come to a training session. But we have only played three games, that is nothing so far. We maybe need time to get everything right, my philosophy. My dream is play our style for 90 minutes. I have a philosophy, but you need a team for this.”

What’s your preferred formation?

“We need to improve together, you need the players for that philosophy. It’s a little about me and the players so we can together find the best system for the team. What is important for me is that we play several systems, not just one. But we will be able to do that in the coming months. It’s a process, step by step for all of us to improve. I am not here for us to play German or Swiss football. We will play African style, and we won’t change the culture – we take the old in and put in something new also, a good mix maybe. All in good time, maybe we will find the best solutions for us.”
